Prepared By: Sankar Prasad Pani

Blackbuck a schedule 1 species and enlisted as endangered wild animal in IUCN list. Black Bucks are in news for two reasons and one is being protected by bishnoi communities of Rajasthan and the other is popular Bollywood star Mr. Salaman Khan has to spend few days in Jail in the charge of haunting Blackbuck in Rajasthan. Blackbucks are also restricted to Rajasthan, Orissa and one more state. In Orissa it is restricted to open fields of Aska Region and sands of Balukhanada.
Bhetanai village in Aska Block of Ganjam District in Orissa has becoming a place of attraction of wildlife lovers because of this endangered wild animal the Black buck. The area also is having a good number with 1611 in 2008 census and it was only 786 in 2004.With in four year the population is doubled shows the animal is quite safe and secured in the region. The habitat of blackbuck is also expanding and now spread over 40 villages in the region. Recently Jhagadei and Talarampalli villages witnessed the presence of blackbuck. Kholakhali, Dhanicha, siddhanai, Pandiapathar, Raninda, Gollapali, Badakholi, Antarapali, Solamaili and Pangidi are also known to be habitats of the black buck in the region.
The blackbucks feel at home in the region because of two regions. Firstly the local farmers believe Blackbuck as Friends and auspicious and have a faith that blackbucks are the signs of good harvest. So the farmers do not cause any harm even if the black bucks graze on the crop field.
The second reason is the Blackbuck Management committee a seven member body headed by Mr. Amulya Upadhyay also the honorary wildlife warden of Ganjam district. The committee has kept an award of Rupees one thousand for informing about the poacher in case it is killed and rupees fifty for informing about the newborn calf. Since the inception of committee only one case of black buck killing came to the notice and the committee handed over the accused to forest department for prosecution. In the year 2008, the state government proposed to the Ministry of Environment and Forest, Government of India for declaring the site as Community Reserve under wildlife protection (amendment) act 2002. Prior to this the site was treated as Game Reserve.
